Without fear of cold, self heating batteries can be charged quickly at 42 C below zero.

According to foreign media, the engineers of the Penn State University have developed a self - heated battery that can be quickly charged regardless of the external temperature.
Yang Xiaoguang, an assistant research professor at Penn State University, said: "electric cars are very popular on the west coast of the United States because the climate is good over there. But once you move the electric car to the east coast of the United States or Canada, there will be a big problem. We prove that such self heating batteries can be quickly charged without being affected by external temperature. "
Previously, researchers have developed a self heating battery to avoid power consumption under freezing point. Now, such batteries are also applicable to this principle, and can be quickly charged for 15 minutes at 42 C below zero (45 F).
Professor Wang Zhaoyang, Professor of chemical engineering, material science and engineering, and director of the center for electrochemical engines, said: "the unique feature of our battery is that it can be heated by itself and automatically converted to the charging mode. In addition, there is no need to change the charging station that has been installed outside. After all, the control of heating and charging occurs inside the battery rather than on the charger. Moreover, this way of charging at any time and anywhere allows car manufacturers to have lighter and safer small batteries on vehicles. "
The researchers published their prototype test results in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They found that the self heating battery can withstand 4500 times 15 minutes of charging under 32 F, the battery capacity loss only 20%, can provide about 280000 miles of endurance, and can work for 12.5 years. Under the same conditions, the traditional battery lost 20% of the battery charger capacity after 50 charging.
